Gate Remote Not Working? Check These First

A remote that suddenly stops opening the gate is one of the most common calls we get, and a good share of them turn out to be a five-minute fix. Work through this list in order before assuming the worst.

1. Replace the remote battery

Start here, because it’s the cause more often than anything else. Remote batteries weaken gradually, so the first symptoms are usually reduced range or needing to press the button twice. Replace the battery, test from close to the gate, then from further away.

2. Try another remote, and try the wall button or keypad

This one test tells you a lot. If a second remote works, the problem is the first remote and not the gate. If no remote works but a wall button or keypad does, the motor is fine and the fault is in the radio receiver. If nothing works, check whether the gate has power at all.

3. Check whether the gate has power

Is the control board’s light on? Has the breaker tripped? During a power cut, is the battery backup still alive? A gate that’s completely dead is a power problem, not a remote problem.

Gate completely unresponsive and you’ve ruled out the obvious? Call or WhatsApp us on +254 722 708034 and tell us what you’re seeing.

4. Think about what changed

Did the problem start after a storm, a power surge, or someone working near the gate? Surges can damage the receiver. Did you recently install a new device nearby, such as a WiFi extender, a security camera, or another transmitter? Interference from other equipment can cut a remote’s range sharply.

5. Look at the receiver and antenna

If your gate has a separate receiver, check that its antenna is intact and not damaged or loose. A broken antenna is a common reason for a remote that only works from a metre or two away.

When it’s more than the remote

Some problems can’t be fixed by the owner:

  • The remote was never programmed, or the receiver’s memory was wiped by a fault or surge. Remotes can be re-learned to the control board, but this needs the right procedure for your brand.
  • A failed receiver or control board. If nothing responds and the gate has power, a board fault is likely.
  • A lost remote you want to disable. If a remote has been stolen or lost, don’t just replace it. Have the old one removed from the system so it can’t open your gate, which matters for security.

Lost a remote, or think someone else might have one that shouldn’t? Email info@automaticgates.co.ke and we’ll help you secure the system.

A word on cheap replacement remotes

Universal and copy remotes are sold everywhere and often don’t work reliably with branded motors, or work at reduced range. If you need a replacement, get the right remote for your specific Centurion or Nice Hansa system. It costs a little more and avoids the next round of the same problem.

If you’re repeatedly replacing remote batteries

That’s worth a look. A remote that drains its battery quickly, or a gate that needs repeated presses, usually points to a weak receiver or a signal problem, not bad luck. A proper diagnosis finds it.

Get in touch or see our repair and maintenance service and we’ll diagnose it properly, usually in one visit.
