Is an Automatic Gate Safe for Children and Pets?

It’s a fair worry. A gate is a heavy piece of metal, and a motor doesn’t know the difference between a car bumper and a child’s arm unless something tells it to stop. The short answer is that a properly installed automatic gate is safe, and a badly set up one genuinely isn’t. The difference comes down to a handful of things you can check yourself.

The three safety layers every gate should have

Safety beams (photo-eyes). A pair of small sensors, one on each side of the gate opening, that send an invisible infrared beam across it. If anything breaks that beam while the gate is closing, the gate stops or reverses. They’re the first line of defence, and they should be included in every quote, not sold as an extra.

Obstruction detection in the motor. Good motors sense when the gate meets unexpected resistance, such as a person, a dog or a parked car in the way, and reverse automatically. This is a separate system from the beams, and it’s what protects someone who’s right beside the gate rather than in the middle of the opening.

A manual release. Every gate needs a way to be freed by hand when the motor is off, whether during a fault or an outage. Know where yours is, and make sure every adult in the house knows how to use it. A gate that traps someone with no way to release it is the worst case, and it’s avoidable.

The mistake we see most often

Beams that are misaligned, dirty, or switched off. A beam knocked slightly out of line by a car, or covered in dust and spider webs, will either stop working or cause the gate to behave oddly, and some people respond to that annoyance by bypassing it entirely. Don’t. If your gate keeps stopping for no reason, the fix is realigning or cleaning the beam, not removing it.

A simple monthly check you can do yourself

  1. Test the beams. Start the gate closing and wave something through the beam. It should stop or reverse straight away.
  2. Test the obstruction response. With the gate closing, gently hold a broom handle in its path. It should reverse and not push through.
  3. Check the manual release. Make sure it still works and nobody has lost the key.

If any of these fail, stop using the gate in automatic mode until it’s fixed. Our repair and maintenance service covers all brands, including gates we didn’t install.

Practical habits that matter more than any sensor

Keep children from treating the gate as a toy or climbing on it, however tempting it is to a ten year old. Don’t let anyone stand in the gate’s path while it moves. And with a sliding gate in particular, be aware of the gap between the moving leaf and the fixed wall or post, which is where fingers get caught.

Choosing safety over saving

A cheap quote that leaves out safety beams, or fits low-grade sensors, is saving money exactly where it shouldn’t. If you’re comparing quotes, check that beams, obstruction detection and a manual release are all listed. They cost little next to the motor and matter far more than most people realise.
