Automatic Gates and Access Control for Schools and Institutions
A school or institution has a problem a house doesn’t: hundreds of people moving through the same entrance in short, predictable bursts, many of them children, with strangers arriving throughout the day who need to be checked. A gate is part of the answer, but only part.
Separate vehicles from people
The most useful change is physical separation. A vehicle entrance and a pedestrian entrance, each with its own control, keeps cars away from children and lets you manage each flow differently. Pupils walking through a busy vehicle gate at drop-off is exactly the risk worth designing out.
Planning or reviewing the entrances for a school or institution? Call or WhatsApp us on +254 722 708034 and we’ll walk the site with you.
Vehicle access: gate or barrier
For the main vehicle entrance, a sliding or swing gate secures the perimeter, while a barrier at an internal drop-off or parking area keeps traffic moving. We compare the two in our post on barrier gates vs full gates. Whatever you choose, sensors and obstruction detection matter more here than almost anywhere, because of who’s nearby.
Pedestrian access
Turnstiles and controlled pedestrian gates let staff and authorised people through while keeping others out. Combined with card or biometric readers, they also give you a record of who came and went, useful for staff attendance and for knowing who is on site in an emergency.
Visitors and deliveries
Every institution needs a way to see and admit visitors without leaving the entrance unguarded. A video intercom at the gate or reception lets staff identify visitors and release the gate remotely. See our intercom systems for what’s available. Pairing this with a guard post gives you two layers: a person and a system.
Access for staff and parents
Staff can use RFID cards that are issued and cancelled as people join and leave. Parents and drivers are a harder group: large numbers, constant turnover. Most schools handle this with guard-controlled access plus a list, and keep cards for staff and regular suppliers. Match the system to the group, as we explain in our guide to RFID, biometric and keypad access.

Power and reliability
An entrance that fails at 7:30am when everyone arrives is a real problem. Battery backup is essential, and a school with frequent outages should consider a larger battery or solar. A manual override that guards know how to use is non-negotiable.
Procurement and paperwork
Institutions often need formal quotations, itemised pricing and sometimes board approval. We provide detailed written quotes after a site visit and can phase work if the budget requires, such as starting with the main entrance and adding pedestrian control later.
