Above-ground arm motors mount on the gate post with a visible articulated arm connecting to the gate leaf. Reliable, straightforward to service, and the most affordable option — suitable for most Kenyan residential properties. Underground hydraulic actuators are buried at the hinge pivot point in a sealed housing and are completely invisible when the gate is closed. The gate appears to swing open by itself. This is the premium choice for Karen, Runda, Muthaiga, and other high-end properties. Underground systems cost significantly more (typically KSh 60,000–100,000 per leaf more than above-ground) but provide an unmatched aesthetic. Both inward and outward opening configurations can be automated — the motor arm is configured at the site assessment to suit your gate's existing swing direction. Inward-opening gates (the gate swings into the compound) are the most common in Kenya, as they don't require outside clearance and cannot be forced by a vehicle driving at the gate from the road. Outward-opening gates require adequate clearance outside the perimeter and carry a slight risk to pedestrians on the pavement — they are generally only recommended where inside space does not permit inward opening. For sloped driveways, inward opening is almost always the only practical option.

Yes — with proper backup. Our standard package can be fitted with a battery backup (add-on, KSh 4,500–8,500) that powers the gate through typical KPLC outages. Our Solar package (KSh 192,000) includes a solar panel and deep-cycle battery as standard, providing indefinite backup — the battery is continuously recharged by the solar panel, meaning even a week-long power cut does not affect gate operation. Every installation also includes a manual release procedure so the gate can always be operated by hand if all power fails.

In most cases, yes. Retrofitting an above-ground arm motor onto an existing swing gate is straightforward provided: the gate's hinges are structurally sound (not rusted through or structurally compromised), the gate swings freely and evenly when pushed by hand, and there is an adequate wall or post adjacent to the hinge to mount the motor. Underground actuator retrofits require excavation of a shallow pit at the hinge base — feasible on most properties but more complex. Our engineer assesses all these factors at the free site visit and advises honestly on whether retrofit is appropriate or whether any pre-work is needed.

All packages include 2 remote controls as standard. Additional access methods available as add-ons: extra remote controls (KSh 2,500–3,500 each), PIN keypad (KSh 8,500–18,000), RFID card reader (KSh 9,500–22,000), fingerprint biometric reader (KSh 18,000–38,000), video intercom / HD doorbell (KSh 22,000–55,000 — included in the Intercom package), GSM phone-call gate access module (KSh 3,500–8,500), and smartphone WiFi app control (KSh 8,500–18,500). Most residential clients use remotes plus a PIN keypad; commercial and estate clients often add RFID cards and video intercom.

Both gate types can be made completely safe with proper safety features. The key for swing gates is the safety beam system — infrared beams that detect any person, child, or animal in the gate's swing arc and stop and reverse the gate immediately. Additionally, the obstacle detection sensitivity in the control board must be correctly calibrated so the gate stops immediately upon any contact force. Premier Automatic Gates Systems tests and documents all safety systems during commissioning. We recommend adding edge safety strips to swing gates in properties with young children — pressure-sensitive rubber strips on the gate's leading edge provide tactile detection as an additional safety layer.
